10.1 100-Mbps TX Media System

The 100BASE-TX interface in the figure is shown connected directly to a 100BASE-TX hub port. Outboard transceivers attached to a 40-pin MII connector on the interface or the hub could also be used to make this connection.

The 100BASE-TX media system is based on specifications published in the ANSI TP-PMD physical media standard. The 100BASE-TX system operates over two pairs of wires, one pair for receive data signals and the other pair for transmit data signals. Since the ANSI TP-PMD specification provides for the use of either unshielded twisted-pair or shielded twisted-pair cable, the 100BASE-TX system also does so.

The most popular wiring used today is unshielded twisted-pair cable. The two wires in each pair of the cable must be twisted together for the entire length of the segment, and kept twisted to within approximately 1/2 inch of any connector or wire termination point. This is a standard technique used to improve the signal-carrying characteristics of an unshielded wire pair.
