The Session Layer
The fifth layer is the Session layer. This layer is responsible for managing connections between two machines during the course of communication between them. This layer is the one which determines whether it has received all pertinent information for the session and whether it can stop receiving or transmitting data. This layer also has built-in error correction and recovery methods. TCP/IP utilizes two Application Programming Interfaces (APIs)—Windows Sockets and NetBIOS—for determining whether all information has been sent and received between two connected machines.
