Internet Group Management Protocol

Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) is a protocol and set of specifications that allow machines to be added and removed from IP address groups, utilizing the class D range of addresses mentioned earlier. IP allows the assignment of class D addresses to groups of machines so that they may receive broadcast data as one functional unit. Machines can be added and removed from these units or groups, or be members of multiple groups. The reason for assigning the cable television icon to this protocol in Figure 2.24 is based on how both cable TV and IGMP work. Both work in fundamentally the same way.

For instance, when you want to receive the premium channels, you pay more money and the cable company alters your cable box so that you can receive the premium channels. You have therefore joined the group of people who receive the premium cable channels. All you have to do to remove yourself from this group is stop paying your bill. And presto, several months later, you no longer get the premium channels you once had. If you are not a subscriber, you never see the pay channels. But if you want premium channels you can get a wide range of choices, just as you can be a member of a number of Class D addresses, or IGMP groups, to receive broadcasts.

Most implementations of the TCP/IP protocol stack support this on the local machine; however routers designed to broadcast IGMP messages from one network to another are still in the experimental stage. Routers are designed to initiate queries for multicast groups on local network segments to determine whether they should be broadcasting on that segment. If at least one member of an IGMP group exists or responds with a IGMP response, the router processes IGMP datagrams and broadcasts them on the segment.
