Overview

A network protocol suite such as TCP/IP has to have a methodology by which devices on the network can identify each other at every level of the network model. TCP/IP provides identification at the Internet layer of the TCP/IP networking model in the form of IP addressing. Refer to Chapter 2 for a discussion of the four layers.

Remember that the Internet layer of the TCP/IP networking model is equivalent to the Network layer of the OSI Reference Model.

Networked devices such as a computer or printer in a TCP/IP network rely on an identification scheme similar in concept to a postal system. In order for me to send a letter to you, I will have to submit the letter to my local postal system. For the system to deliver the correspondence, I will have to enclose it in an envelope clearly marked with the country, ZIP/postal code, city, street, and name identifying you and where you live. I will also include my return address, in order for the letter to be returned if you have changed your address or for you to write back.

In order to send information from one component to another through a TCP/IP network the information, like our correspondence, must contain the address of the recipient and the sender.

Instead of a letter this information is packaged, at the Internet Layer of the TCP/IP networking model, in units known as datagrams. The addresses are represented by 32-bit numbers called IP addresses.
