Conversion Between Decimal and Binary Numbers
The term bit is commonly used to describe a 1 or 0 and is a contraction of the words binary digit. Binary means a value of 2, and therefore bit patterns use a base 2 system, whereas decimal numbers us a base 10 system. For the purpose of converting IP addresses between decimal and binary, think of each decimal number as being mapped to an 8 digit binary number. For example, the IP address 207.21.32.12 can be represented as shown in table 3.2.
Table 3.3 shows possible values of each bit in an octet.
This means that the binary number 11010 is the same as 16 + 8 + 2 or 26.
