Subdividing a Network

Internetworks are networks comprised of individual segments connected by routers. The reasons for having distinct segments are as follows:

They permit physically remote local networks to be connected.
A mix of network technologies can be connected, such as ethernet on one segment and token ring on another.
They allow an unlimited number of hosts to communicate by combining subnets, even though the number of hosts on each segment is limited by the type of network used.
Network congestion is reduced as broadcasts and local network traffic are limited to the local segment.

Each segment is a subnet of the internetwork, and requires a unique network ID or specifically a subnet ID.
