Exercise 4.2: Viewing Default Subnet Masks
This exercise notes the default subnet mask assigned to each TCP/IP address. You should have installed TCP/IP on your Windows NT computer.
| 1. | Open the Network Properties by right-clicking Network Neighborhood and selecting Properties from the resulting menu. |
| 2. | Select the Protocols tab. |
| 3. | Select TCP/IP and then select Properties. |
| 4. | Write down any existing IP address so that you can restore this address when the exercise is over. |
| 5. | Select the Specify an IP Address button. |
| 6. | Type a Class A address in the IP address field, such as 9.36.108.45. |
| 7. | Note the subnet mask that appears by default. |
| 8. | Select Close to exit the Network Properties dialog box. |
| 9. | Repeat steps 1-3 to open the TCP/IP properties. |
| 10. | Type a Class B address in the IP address field, such as 131.107.2.200. |
| 11. | Note the subnet mask that appears by default. |
| 12. | Select Close to exit the Network Properties dialog box. |
| 13. | Repeat steps 1-3 to open the TCP/IP properties. |
| 14. | Type a Class C address in the IP address field, such as 200.20.5.16. |
| 15. | Note the subnet mask that appears by default. |
| 16. | Type your original IP address as noted in step 4. |
- Select Close to exit the Network Properties dialog box.
