Dynamic Routing

The discussion to this point has focused on how to manually edit the route table to notify routers of the existence of networks to which they are not physically connected. This would be an enormously difficult task on large networks, where routes and networks may change on a frequent basis. It also makes redundant pathways horribly complex to manage, because you have to rely on each host to manage multiple default gateways and utilize dead gateway detection. Even utilizing these features on the client side does not guarantee timely reactions to the failure of links between routers.

These problems led to the development of routing protocols used specifically by routers to dynamically update each other’s tables. Two of the most common protocols used by dynamic routers are RIP and OSPF. These protocols notify other routers that support these protocols of the networks they are attached to and of any changes that occur due to links being disconnected or becoming too congested to efficiently pass traffic.

The standard rule of thumb when considering the use of either protocol is that RIP works well for small to medium-sized networks, and OSPF works well for medium to large-sized networks. The characteristics of RIP are discussed here because NT supports RIP on its multi-homed routers. The characteristics of OSPF are left to other reference sources. NT multihomed routers do not support the OSPF protocol out of the box.
