Installing the DHCP Relay Agent
Essentially, the job of the DHCP relay agent is to forward DHCP broadcast messages between DHCP enabled clients and DHCP servers, across IP routers. The relay agent can be configure on any NT Server computer and adds very little load. The section deals with installing and configuring the DHCP relay agent.
The DCHP relay agent that comes with NT 4.0 is a new service that will listen for DHCP broadcasts and forward them to one or more configured DHCP servers. This is different from an RFC1542 compliant router in that the system running the relay agent is not a router. The DHCP relay agent is similar to a WINS proxy agent—discussed in Chapter 9.
| 1. | Open the Network configuration dialog box and select the Services tab. |
| 2. | Select Add and from the list that appears, select the DHCP relay agent. Click OK and when prompted, enter the path to the distribution files. |
| 3. | Click the Protocols tab and double-click the TCP/IP protocol. |
| 4. | On the DHCP Relay tab enter the IP address of a DHCP server and the maximum number of hops and seconds that the relay can take. |
| 5. | Close the TCP/IP configuration dialog box and the Network configuration dialog box. |
| 6. | Restart the computer when prompted. |
