DHCPACK Phase

After the server that offered the lease receives the DHCPREQUEST message, it checks its DHCP database to ensure that the IP address is still available. If the requested lease remains available, the DHCP server marks that IP address as being leased in its DHCP database and broadcasts a DHCPACK to acknowledge that the IP address has been leased to the DHCP client. The DHCPACK contains the same information as the DHCPOFFER sent, plus any optional DHCP information that has been configured for that scope as a scope option. If the requested lease is no longer available, the DHCP server broadcasts a DHCP negative acknowledgment (DHCPNACK) containing the DHCP client’s hardware address.

When the DHCP client receives a DHCPNACK, it must start the lease request process over with a DHCPDISCOVER message. After receiving a DHCPACK, the DHCP client can continue to initialize TCP/IP, and it updates its registry with the IP addressing information included with the lease. The client continues to use the leased IP address information until the command ipconfig/release is typed from a command prompt, or it receives a DHCPNACK from the DHCP server after unsuccessfully renewing its lease.
