b-node
The simplest way to resolve a name on the network is to ask everyone on the network if a name is his or her name. Obviously, this has to be done as a broadcast to the network with every host on the network responding to the broadcast.
NetBIOS Name Queries that are broadcast can take up a significant amount of bandwidth from the network, and also take CPU time from every host on the network. This causes the overall network performance to not only seem slower, but to be slower. Windows NT attempts three times to resolve the name using broadcasting, waiting 7.5 seconds between each.
The steps a b-node system goes through to resolve a name are as follows:
| 1. | Checking the NetBIOS Name Cache |
| 2. | Broadcasting a NetBIOS Name Query |
| 3. | Checking the LMHOSTS file (Microsoft enhanced b-node only) |
| 4. | Checking a HOST file |
| 5. | Checking with a DNS server |
