Installing a WINS Server

WINS must be installed on a Windows NT Server version 3.5x or 4.0. WINS servers on any version are compatible with the others; that is, you can mix an NT 3.51 WINS Server with an NT 4.0 WINS Server, including using them as replication partners. You can install WINS on any configuration of NT server—a member server, a Backup Domain Controller, or a Primary Domain Controller. The WINS server should have a static TCP/IP address with a subnet mask and default gateway along with any other TCP/IP parameters required for your network (such as a DNS server address).

You can assign a DHCP address to the WINS server (the address should be reserved so the WINS server always receives the same address), but using a static address is the recommended option. Also, you should specify a WINS server address; in this case, the address would be the same machine. The exercises show you how to install a WINS server.

[note.gif]

Normally the WINS service should not be run on a computer that is multihomed (has two or more network cards). This is because the WINS server always registers its names in the local database. This is a problem if you will run DOS clients as they will always try the first address that they receive from the WINS server. Since the WINS server will register all of its card in order, the DOS client might not be able to reach resources on the WINS server from network other than the one on which the first card is located.

The WINS service is installed as a network service. After it is installed, it is immediately available for use. However, until WINS clients are configured with the TCP/IP address of the WINS server, they cannot register their names nor use the WINS server for name resolution. In fact, if there weren’t any clients configured with this WINS server’s address, the WINS database would remain empty unless you add static entries or set up replication with another WINS server.
