Advanced Configuration Options

You can turn on or turn off the logging of entries to the WINS database. This log file records changes that are made to the WINS database before they are made. By default, logging is on, which gives the WINS server a backup via the log file. If you turn off the logging, the WINS server registers names more quickly, but you lose the backup support of the log file. These settings are configured through the WINS Advanced Configuration dialog box, as shown in Figure 9.6.

The following are the advanced settings you can configure:
  • Log Detailed Events. If you turn this on, the logging of WINS events in Event Viewer is more verbose. This means that you get more useful troubleshooting information from the log file. However, some performance degradation occurs when verbose logging is turned on.
  • Replicate Only With Partners. By default, WINS replicates only with other WINS servers that are specifically configured as push or pull partners. If you want the WINS server to replicate automatically, you must turn off this setting.
  • Backup On Termination. If you set this option, the WINS database is automatically backed up when the WINS service is stopped. However, the database is not backed up when the NT server is shut down.
  • Migrate On/Off. If this switch is on, static entries that have the same address as a WINS client requesting registration are overwritten. This option is helpful if you are converting a computer from a non-NT machine to an NT machine with the same TCP/IP address. To have addresses resolved for this non-NT machine in the past, you may have added a static entry to the WINS database. With the option on, the new dynamic entry can overwrite the old static entry. It is usually best to turn off this switch after you have migrated (upgraded) the new NT machine. This switch is off by default so static entries are not overwritten.
  • Starting Version Count. This specifies the largest version ID number for the database. Each entry in the database is assigned a version ID. Replication is based on the version ID. A replication partner checks its last replicated entries against the version IDs of the records in the WINS database. The replication partner replicates only records with a later version ID than the last records it replicated from this partner. Usually, you don’t need to change this parameter. However, if the database becomes corrupted, you may need to adjust this number so a replication partner replicates the proper entries.
  • Database Backup Path. When the WINS database is backed up, it is copied to a local hard drive. This specifies the path to a directory on a local drive where the WINS backups are stored. This directory can also be used to automatically restore the WINS database. You must specify a local drive path.
