Browsing in Windows NT

The sharing of resources is the key to networking. For what other purpose does networking exist? Therefore, it is of utmost importance that there be an easy way of not only sharing a resource but of knowing what resources on the network are accessible. Figure 10.1 shows multiple networks, each with resources that need to be accessible by the other networks.

Microsoft has made this process of viewing network resources available through what may be referred to as browsers.

What these browsers do is actually collect a list (called the browse list) of the resources available on the network and pass this list out to requesting clients. One main computer is designated to collect and update the browse list. Having one computer keep track of the browse list frees the other systems to continue processing without the added overhead of constantly finding where everything is. It also cuts down on the network traffic by having a single source for this list of information rather than everyone needing a separate copy.
