Browsing Tools

The next question you may ask is, “How do I browse and what am I browsing for?” The answer is easier than you might think and you have probably already used this browsing technique. One very simple example of browsing is the Network Neighborhood icon on your desktop. When you open up Network Neighborhood it provides a list of the network resources available in your local workgroup or domain. These network resources include but are not limited to: printers, fax, CD-ROM, and other drives or applications available on the network. This is the default list you should see when you first open it. The top icon, Entire Network, refers to just that, anything else that may be available on your network but not necessarily in your local workgroup or domain. This implies that there may be multiple workgroups and or domains in your network environment. Figure 10.2 illustrates the domain grouping.

When you start opening up some of these remote domains or workgroups, you are in the process of browsing. This is much like window shopping. You go to the mall not knowing exactly what you need and so you browse through the shops until you find what you want.

The same applies to the network, but now you are browsing network resources—remote files, printers, CD-ROMs. Anything you need access to can be considered a resource. After you find the resource you want, you can utilize it—such as by printing a document to a network printer or by changing to a server-based database. By using the Network Neighborhood for browsing network resources, you are using the graphical view method or GUI (Graphical User Interface). You may also browse network resources from the command prompt by using the Net View command. After you specify the server name, a list appears showing the resources available on that specific server. Notice that you must use the correct Universal Naming Convention with the two backslashes (\\Server\Share).

For example

C:\users\default>net view \\instructor

results in the following:

Shared resources at \\instructor
Share name Type Used as Comment
cdrom Disk
MSDOS Disk
NETLOGON Disk Logon server share
Public Disk
SQLSETUP Disk
WGPO Disk
The command completed successfully.
