Filling Roles

Now that browsing roles are defined, who can fill them? Windows NT Workstation, Windows NT Server, Windows for Workgroups, and Windows 95 all can perform these browsing roles. However, only a Windows NT Server acting as a Primary Domain Controller (PDC) may occupy the role of the domain Master Browser. In a LAN, the Domain Master Browser is also the Master Browser.

Windows NT Workstation and Windows NT Member Servers can become backup browsers if there are at least three Windows NT server-based computers not already filling these roles for the workgroup or domain. Figure 10.5 shows how the browse list is distributed.

How do you know and control in which roles your computers are participating? Unfortunately, there is not a way to see what browsing role the computer is filling without looking in the Registry. By understanding some default rules and by a little user intervention, however, you can control the browsing environment to a certain extent. The first default to grasp is that Windows NT and Windows 95 are set to auto—meaning it potentially can fill a browsing role. The Master Browser is chosen through what is called an election process, which is based on the following criteria:
  • A Windows NT-based computer takes precedence over a Windows 95 or Windows for Workgroups computer. Windows 95 will take priority over Windows for Workgroups. This is at any time. If a Windows 95 machine has been on for two years as soon as a Windows NT computer comes online an election will be held and the Windows NT computer will win because of its higher priority rating.
  • The computer that has been turned on the longest wins the election and will become the new Master Browser. The idea behind this is that if it has been on the longest it has the most potential to not go down frequently, thus providing a more accurate and current browse list.
  • If none of the preceding criteria fit, the server with a NetBIOS name of lowest alphabetical lettering will win the election race of Master Browser. For example: a server with the name of Argyle will become the next Master Browser over a server with the name of Zot.
