Collecting the Browse List

The first important part of being able to browse network resources is the collection of the browse list itself. The Master Browser continually updates its browse list to include the current network resources available. This update process is continual, in that it is constantly having to revise its browse list as network resources appear and disappear. This process happens every time a computer is turned on that has something to share and every time one that is sharing resources is turned off. The Master Browser obtains a list of servers in its own domain or workgroup, as well as a list of other domains and workgroups and updates these servers with network resources to the browse list as changes are made. Much of this process has to do with browser announcements. Figure 10.7 shows the browser collection process.

When a computer that is running a server service is turned on, it announces itself to the Master Browser, which then adds this new resource to its browse list. This happens regardless of whether the computer has resources to share or not. When a computer is shut down properly, it announces to the Master Browser that it is leaving and again the Master Browser updates its list accordingly. If a Master Browser has an empty list, it can force domains to announce themselves so that it can add them to its list.

Master Browsers also receive what are called DomainAnnouncement packets that come from other domains and place these packets in their own local browse lists. These DomainAnnouncement packets contain the following information:
  1. The name of the domain.
  2. The name of the Master Browser for that domain.
  3. Whether the Browser is a Windows NT Server or Windows NT Workstation computer.
  4. If the Browser is a Windows NT Server computer, it is the Primary Domain Controller for that domain.
