The WINS Solution

WINS (Windows Internet Naming Service) helps fix the problem of NetBIOS broadcast difficulties by dynamically registering the IP address and NetBIOS name, and keeping track of them in a database. Keeping these computer names in its database greatly enhances the network performance. Whenever they need to find a server, clients access the WINS server rather than broadcast on the network. Accessing the WINS server directly allows for a more direct approach when looking for network resources. Plus, it makes updating much easier, because you do not have to manually configure anything. Using a WINS server also provides easier browsing capability because you can freely use NetBIOS names in the place of IP address. The following is an example of using the PING utility with the NetBIOS name rather than specifying the entire IP address.
