Exercise 11.2: Editing the HOSTS File
This exercise shows you how to find and edit the HOSTS file.
| 1. | From the Start menu, choose Programs, MS-DOS prompt. |
| 2. | Change directory to the appropriate location by typing cd \systemroot\System32\Drivers\etc. Systemroot is your Windows NT directory (normally \WINNT). |
| 3. | Type PING ME and notice the error that comes back because the host is not found. |
| 4. | Type
EDIT
HOSTS. The last
line of the file should read: "127.0.0.1 localhost" |
| 5. | Move one
space to the right of the last character and type
ME. The line now
reads: "127.0.0.1 localhost ME" |
| 6. | Exit the editor and save the changes. |
| 7. | Type PING ME and notice the successful results. |
