Exercise 11.2: Editing the HOSTS File

This exercise shows you how to find and edit the HOSTS file.

1.	From the Start menu, choose Programs, MS-DOS prompt.
2.	Change directory to the appropriate location by typing cd \systemroot\System32\Drivers\etc. Systemroot is your Windows NT directory (normally \WINNT).
3.	Type PING ME and notice the error that comes back because the host is not found.
4.	Type EDIT HOSTS. The last line of the file should read: "127.0.0.1 localhost"
5.	Move one space to the right of the last character and type ME. The line now reads: "127.0.0.1 localhost ME"
6.	Exit the editor and save the changes.
7.	Type PING ME and notice the successful results.

In this exercise, you edited the HOSTS file and added an alias.
