The Structure of DNS

Some host-name systems, like NetBIOS names, use a flat database. With a flat database, all names exist at the same level, so there can’t be any duplicate names. These names are like Social Security numbers: every participant in the Social Security program must have a unique number. The Social Security System is a national system that encompasses all workers in the United States, so it must use an identification system to distinguish between all the individuals in the United States.

DNS names are located in a hierarchical paths, like a directory structure. As Figure 12.1 illustrates, you can have a file called TEST.TXT in C:\ and another file called TEST.TXT in C:\ASCII. In a network using DNS, you can have more than one server with the same name, as long as each is located in a different path.
