Reverse Lookup File
The reverse lookup file has entries that enable IP addresses to be resolved to host names. Normally DNS is used to resolve host names to IP addresses, so the opposite process is called reverse lookup. The files are named according the Class of network, but with the octets in reverse order. Remember, a Class A network uses the first octet of the IP address for the network address, a Class B address uses the first 2 octets, and a Class C address uses the first 3 octets. The following examples are zone files for a Class A, Class B, and Class C network.
| Network ID | Zone File Name |
| 36.x.x.x | 36.in-addr.arpa |
| 138.107.x.x | 107.138.in-addr.arpa |
| 242.23.108.x | 108.23.242.in-addr-arpa |
