Pointer Record

Pointer records are the reverse lookup entries. They specify the IP address in reverse order (like a DNS name with the most specific information first) and the corresponding host name. The syntax for a PTR record follows:

<ip reverse domain name> IN PTR <host name>

An example of this record follows:

43.3.107.136.in-addr.arpa. IN PTR InetServer.microsoft.com

This example is an entry for the server called InetServer with the IP address of 136.107.3.43.

Figure 12.11 shows a reverse lookup zone that includes DNS Server a PTR record as viewed in DNS Manager.
