Installing the DNS Server

The first item of business is to install the DNS Server. The system on which you install the DNS service must be running Windows NT Server and needs to have a static IP configuration (as seen in Chapter 1). Installing the DNS Server is simple given that, installing it is the same as installing any other network service. The steps are as follows:

1.	Open the Network settings dialog box (right-click the Network Neighborhood and choose Properties).
2.	On the Services tab, click Add, and select the Microsoft DNS Server (see Figure 13.1).
3.	Click OK to add the service. When prompted, enter the directory in which your Windows NT source files are located.
4.	Choose Close from the Network settings dialog box and, when prompted, restart your system.

You have now installed the DNS Server. To verify that the service is correctly installed, check the Services icon in Control Panel to ensure the Microsoft DNS Server is listed and has started.
