Reinstalling Microsoft DNS Server

A quick note should be made here in case you need to reinstall the DNS Server. When you start adding zones to a Microsoft DNS Server, it by default switches to starting from the registry rather than the DNS files discussed earlier. It makes a note of this in the boot file. When you remove the server (before you reinstall) it does not remove this file; therefore, when you install the DNS Server again it assumes the boot file is valid and tries to read it. This causes several errors in the Event Log and causes the DNS not to start.

Therefore, if you need to remove the DNS Server, you should remove the boot file from the DNS directory. The original file is in the directory %winroot%\system32\dns\backup and you can copy the files back from there; however, the server continues to boot from the registry.

If you need to enable the system to boot from files, you must use the registry editor to open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ CurrentControlSet\Services\DNS\Parameters and delete the value EnableRegistryBoot.
