Roles for a Microsoft DNS Server
The previous chapter discussed the roles that a server can take on Primary and Secondary. Mention also was made of using a DNS Server as a Caching-Only server; that is, a server that can only resolve addresses but which does not host any domains or sub-domains (zones).
The last chapter also discussed a DNS Server that acts as an IP Forwarder. That is, it receives the queries (recursive) from the other hosts on the network, and then attempts to resolve them using a recursive query to another DNS Server. This is useful if you wish to centralize the resolution of addresses at one server (which might be outside your firewall).
In the next few sections this chapter will focus on configuring Microsoft DNS Server for these different roles. The simplest role that a DNS Server has is that of Caching-Only.
