Creating a Primary DNS Server

The purpose of DNS is to resolve names to IP addresses. Therefore, you need to enter the addresses into the DNS server so other users can find your hosts. You do this by creating a zone in the DNS Server and entering the information that you want to make available to the world. The following list covers the steps required to create a zone:

1.	Right-click the server that hosts the zone in the Server List.
2.	Choose New Zone.
3.	From the dialog box that appears, choose Primary (see Figure 13.7). Then choose Next.
4.	Enter the name of the domain (or sub-domain) for which you are creating a zone on the next screen (see Figure 13.8). Then press tab (this automatically enters a zone file name; if you are adding an existing zone file, enter the name of the file that has the information—it must be in the %winroot%\System32\DNS directory). When the information is in, click Next.
5.	On the next screen, choose Finish.

That is all there is to creating a zone. Now you can configure the zone and add the host (and other) records. When you have finished, the DNS Manager should look similar to Figure 13.9.
