Integration with WINS

The last tab in the Zone Properties dialog box is the WINS Lookup tab (see Figure 13.13). You can use WINS to resolve DNS queries by telling the server to use the WINS server. Remember, for this to work, the hosts must use the same name for both their NetBIOS name and the host name, and they must register with the WINS server.

Only a couple of options are available.
  • Use WINS Resolution. Check this box to enable the DNS Server to query the WINS server for queries it receives that it cannot resolve from its own database.
  • Settings only affect local server. Normally a temporary entry is added to the domain when this resolution method is used. Selecting this option only allows the current server to see these entries.
  • WINS Servers. Here you need to enter the address of at least one WINS server. This server is queried in the order entered.
From the WINS Lookup tab, you can also open the Advanced Zone Properties dialog box (see Figure 13.14). You may need to use a couple of other settings in this dialog box.

The options available are described in the following list:
  • Submit DNS Domain as NetBIOS Scope. In some organizations, the NetBIOS scope ID is used to limit the number of hosts you can see using NetBIOS. The WINS server only responds with the address if matching scope IDs are used. Therefore, this option enables you to use the domain name as the NetBIOS scope.
  • Cache Timeout Value. The length of time the DNS Server keeps the information that it gets from the WINS server.
  • Lookup Timeout Value. The length of time the DNS Server waits for a resolution from the WINS server.
