Reverse Lookup
You should now understand the process of looking up an FQDN using a DNS Server. Looking up an IP address to find the host name is exactly the same (only backward). An FQDN starts with the specific host and then the domain; an IP address starts with Recall the dialog box used to add a host included an. To do this, choose DNS from the menu, then Update Server Data Files. This is done automatically when the server is shut down or when you exit the DNS Manager.
Now that the IP address is reversed, it is going the same way as an FQDN. Now you can resolve the address using DNS. Just like resolving www.scrimtech.com, you need to create a zone. This zone must have a particular name. To find the name, take the assigned portion of the address—for example, in 148.53.66.7 the portion that was assigned is 148.53, and for 204.12.25.3 it is 204.12.25. Now, create a zone in which these numbers are reversed and to which you add in-addr.arpa—that is, 53.148.in-addr.arpa or 25.12.204.in-addr.arpa, respectively.
Recall the dialog box used to add a host included an option to create a PTR record as you added hosts (refer to Figure 13.15). For this reason, you need to create the reverse lookup zone first, before the other zones, so these records can be automatically added. Note that you need to create a reverse lookup zone for each address you are assigned.
