NSLOOKUP

Along with the addition of a DNS Server, Windows NT 4.0 also has a tool that uses the DNS and enables you to verify that it is working. The NSLOOKUP command line is shown as follows:

nslookup [-option ...] [computer-to-find | - [server]]

You can use NSLOOKUP to query the DNS Server from the command line (see Table 13.1 for a list of switches) or you can start an interactive session with the server to enable you to query the database. For our purposes, only look at the command line.

The following list provides the options that are available with the NSLOOKUP command.

-t querytype. Lists all records of a given type. The record types are listed under querytype.
-a. Lists all the CNAME entries from the DNS Server.
-d. Dumps all records that are in the DNS Server.
-h. Returns information on the DNS Server’s CPU and operating system.
-s. Returns the well-known services for hosts in the DNS domain.
