Exercise 13.3: Adding Records

Now that you have created the reverse lookup domain and the SunnyDays.com domain, add some records to the database.
1. Right-click the SunnyDays.com and choose Add Host.
2. In the New Host dialog box, add Rob as the Host Name and 160.106.66.7 as the Host IP Address.
3. Check the Create Associated PTR Record to create the reverse lookup record at the same time.
4. Choose Add Host. Now, enter Judy as the Host Name and 160.106.66.9 as the Host IP Address.
5. Click Add Host. Then click the Done button to close the dialog box. You should see the two new records in the DNS Manager.
6. Click on the 106.160.in-addr.arpa domain and press F5 to refresh. Notice there is now a 66 sub-domain.
7. Double-click the 66 sub-domain. What new hosts are there? There should be PTR records for the two hosts you just added.
8. Select the SunnyDays.com domain again. Add the following hosts, ensuring that you add the associated PTR records.
  Mail1 160.106.92.14
  Mail2 160.106.101.80
  Mail3 160.106.127.14
  Web1 160.106.65.7
  Web2 160.106.72.14
  FTP_Pub1 160.106.99.99
  FTP_Pub2 160.106.104.255
  DEV 160.106.82.7
9. Close the New Host dialog box. Verify that the records were added to the SunnyDays.com and the reverse lookup domains.
10. Highlight SunnyDays.com, and choose DNS, New Domain from the menu.
11. Enter DEV as the Name for the new domain and choose OK.
12. Right click on the DEV sub-domain. Choose New Record. Select CNAME as the record type.
13. Enter WWW as the alias, and web2.SunnyDays.com as the Host. (This entry sets up WWW.DEV.SUNNYDAYS.COM to point to WEB2.SUNNYDAYS.COM.)
14. Click OK to add the record. (It should appear in the Zone Info window.)
15. Create the following CNAME entries in the SunnyDays.com domain. Right-click SunnyDays.com, each time choosing New Record.
Alias        Host
  WWW web1.SunnyDays.com
  FTP FTP_PUB1.SunnyDays.com
  DEV_FTP FTP_PUB2.SunnyDays.com
16. Create a new record in the SunnyDays.com domain. This time, choose MX as the Record Type.
17. Leave the Host blank for this record, and enter mail1.SunnyDays.com as the Mail Exchange Server DNS Name. Enter 10 as the Preference.
18. Choose OK to add the record. Add a second MX record for the SunnyDays.com using mail2.SunnyDays.com as the Mail Server and 20 as the Preference.
19. Now add the MX record for dev.SunnyDays.com. To do this, right click on SunnyDays.com and choose New Record; again, this is an MX record.
20. The difference is that you include the Host name. Enter DEV as the Host, add mail3.SunnyDays.com as the Mail Exchange Server DNS Name, and 10 as the preference.
21. Ensure that all the records appear to be in place, and then close the DNS Manager.
