The RSH Utility

RSH provides much the same function as REXEC, but user authentication is handled differently. Unlike with REXEC, you do not need to specify a user name. The only validation performed by RSH is to verify that the user name is in a hidden file on the Unix system (the .rhosts file). If the remote host is configured to allow any user to use RSH, no user name needs to be provided.

[note.gif]

On Unix systems, the .rhosts and the hosts.equiv files are used for authentication. Because these files can be used to grant access to either all users on a computer or some users on a computer, be careful. Refer to Internet Firewalls and Network Security, also by New Riders Publishing, for the formatting and contents of these files and related security issues.

However, because it is extremely unlikely a system would be configured in this way, the RSH utility provides the logged-on user name if no user name is provided. This can be overridden if desired. RSH has the following command-line options:

Runs commands on remote hosts running the RSH service.

C:\>rsh /?
rsh: remote terminal session not supported

Runs commands on remote hosts running the RSH service.

RSH host [-l username] [-n] command

host Specifies the remote host on which to run command.
-l username Specifies the user name to use on the remote
host. If omitted, the logged on user name is used.
-n Redirects the input of RSH to NULL.
command Specifies the command to run.

After you start RSH, it connects to the remote system’s RSH daemon (Unix-speak for a service). The RSH daemon ensures that the user name is in the .rhosts file on the remote host, and if authentication succeeds, the specified command is executed.

Like REXEC, RSH provides a certain degree of security insofar as the remote host validates the access.
