The Telnet Utility
Telnet is defined in RFC 854 as a remote terminal emulation protocol. It provides terminal emulation for DEC VT100, DEC VT52, and TTY terminals. Telnet uses the connection-oriented services of the TCP/IP protocol for communications.
The remote host system must be running a telnet daemon. After you start telnet, you can connect to a remote host using the Connect/Remote system option. You are prompted for the following information (see Figure 14.1):
-
Host
name.
The IP address or host name of the remote host -
Port.
One of the ports supported by the telnet application—telnet, daytime, echo, quotd, or chargen -
Terminal
type.
One of VT100, ANSI (TTY), or VT52
Telnet does not encrypt any information whatsoever. The password and user name are sent as clear text, as is your entire terminal session. If you are using telnet to perform remote administration on a Unix system, your root password could be intercepted by an unscrupulous user.
