Network Monitor

There are two version of the Network Monitor the basic version that comes with Windows NT and the full version that comes with the SMS (Systems Management Server). Both versions will allow you to capture the packets that are flowing into and out of your computer. The Full version that comes with SMS will also allow you extra functionality such as the capability to capture all packets on the local network or on remote networks, edit those packets, derive statistics about protocols and users on the network.

There are two pieces to the Network Monitor. The Agent which will capture the data. There is also the Monitor Tool which can be used to view the data.

The Network Monitor can be used to diagnose more complex issue with connectivity by allowing you see the actual packets that are flowing on the network verifying which steps are being used to resolve names or which port numbers are being used to connect.
