Installing and Configuring SNMP

The SNMP Service can be installed for the following reasons:

You want to monitor TCP/IP with Performance Monitor.
You want to monitor a Windows NT-based system with a third-party application.
You want to set up your computer as an SNMP agent.

The following are steps on installing the SNMP Service, assuming you already have TCP/IP installed and set up. These steps also assume you have administrative privileges to install and utilize SNMP.

1.	Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel.
2.	Double-click Network to bring up the Network properties dialog box.
3.	On the Network Settings dialog box, click Add.
4.	Click the Services tab (see Figure 15.7) and click Add.
5.	The Select Network Service dialog box appears (see Figure 15.8).
6.	Click SNMP Service and then click on OK.
7.	Specify the location of the Microsoft Windows NT distribution files.
8.	After the files are copied, the Microsoft SNMP Properties dialog box appears (see Figure 15.9). The parameters shown in Table 15.1 need to be configured:
9.	Now choose OK to close the SNMP Properties dialog box. Then choose Close to exit the Network properties dialog box. When prompted, Restart your computer.
