Exercise 15.2: Using SNMPUTIL to Access MIB Objects

This exercise is dependent on DHCP, WINS, TCP/IP, and SNMP being set up and you performing these exercises from that host machine. You may want to use the F3 key to bring up similar commands and check your number sequence carefully.

Copy the SNMPUtil.exe to winnt_root.

Go to a command prompt.

Type the following to find out the number of IP addresses leased by your DHCP server by querying the DHCP MIB:

snmputil getnext your_ip_address community_name .1.3.6.1.4.1.311.1.3.2.1.1.1

Type the following to find out how many failed queries have been done by your WINS server by querying the WINS MIB:

snmputil getnext your_ip_address community_name .1.3.6.1.4.1.311.1.2.1.18

Type the following to find out how many successful queries have be done by your WINS server by querying the WINS MIB:

snmputil getnext your_ip_address community_name .1.3.6.1.4.1.311.1.2.1.17

Type the following to find out the version of Windows NT server that you are using. Notice this requires queries; you combine the results to get your full response. Notice here you are querying the LAN Manager MIB, as noted by the change in the hierarchical format.

snmputil getnext your_ip_address community_name .1.3.6.1.4.1.77.1.1.1

snmputil getnext your_ip_address community_name

.1.3.6.1.4.1.77.1.1.2
