TCP/IP Configuration Parameters
Three main parameters specify how TCP/IP is configured: the IP address, the subnet mask, and the default gateway, which is the address of the router. These parameters are configured through the Protocols tab of the Network Properties dialog box. Figure 16.9 shows TCP/IP manually configured on a Windows NT client. Although it is possible to receive an IP address from a DHCP server, for the moment this discussion focuses on parameters that are manually configured. (DHCP is discussed in the section “DHCP Configuration Problems.”)
These TCP/IP parameters must be configured correctly or you cannot connect with TCP/IP. An incorrect configuration can result from typos; if you type the wrong IP address, subnet mask, or default gateway you may not connect properly or even be able to connect at all. To illustrate, if you dial the wrong number when making a telephone call, you can’t reach the party you’re calling. If you read the wrong phone number out of the phone book, you won’t ever make a correct call even if you dial the number you think is correct time and time again.
Whether the TCP/IP configuration parameters are wrong due to a typo or due to a mistaken number, the incorrect parameters affect communications. Different types of problems occur when each of these parameters has a configuration error.
