IP Address Configuration Problems

An incorrect TCP/IP address might not even cause any problems. If you configure an IP address that is on the correct subnet, but uses the wrong host ID, and is not a duplicate, the client may be able to communicate just fine. If, however, the correct IP address has been entered in a static file or database that resolves host names to IP addresses, such as an LMHOSTS file or a DNS database file, there are some communication problems. Typically, therefore, an incorrect IP address does cause some problems.

Incorrect configuration of the TCP/IP parameters can cause different symptoms for each type of parameter. The following sections examine the effects that each TCP/IP parameter can have on IP communications.
