Windows NT Network Configuration

Figure 16.2 shows the Network Properties for a Windows NT computer installed as a Windows NT Workstation or a Windows NT Server. You can access this box through Control Panel, Network. A number of things can be configured in the Network Properties dialog box that affect the capability of Windows NT to communicate over the network, and thus use TCP/IP. As Figure 16.2 shows, one of properties you can configure through this dialog box is the NetBIOS name of the computer. This name is used for any NetBIOS-related communication. When you connect to other Microsoft computers, you use NetBIOS names, which must be resolved to a TCP/IP address if you are using TCP/IP.

The Services tab of the dialog box shows the networking services are installed on the computer. For TCP/IP connections, you need at the very least the Workstation Service (client software). Additional services are installed by default, however, such as the Server service and the Computer Browser service. Figure 16.3 shows the Services tab of the Network Properties dialog box, with the default services that are part of a typical Windows NT installation.

The Protocols tab of the dialog box (see Figure 16.4) shows the networking protocols that are installed and enables you to configure them. TCP/IP configuration is discussed in the section “TCP/IP Configuration Parameters.” If you need to add TCP/IP or simply want to see whether it is installed, however, this is the place to look.

Adapter card drivers are installed and configured in the Adapters tab (see Figure 16.5). Without a properly configured adapter card driver, you cannot communicate on the network, regardless of the protocol you are using. Figure 16.5 shows the configuration for an NE2000 adapter card. Both the IRQ and I/O Address must be correct. For other adapter cards, you may have other types of parameters, such as a slot number or port type (twisted pair or coax connection).

The Bindings tab (see Figure 16.6) specifies how the installed network protocols are used for the various networking services. The bindings affect performance by the order they are listed. The top binding is the one NT tries to use, and NT waits for a timeout period before using another protocol if it can’t establish a session with the highest-priority protocol. In addition to changing the priority of the bindings, you can also disable the bindings of a protocol. You can turn off the TCP/IP protocol for the Workstation Service (or any other service, for that matter). With TCP/IP disabled for the Workstation Service (as shown in Figure 16.6), this computer cannot function as a Microsoft client using TCP/IP. The computer cannot, for example, map a drive to a server using TCP/IP. (Other client software, such as FTP or a Web browser, can still use TCP/IP, however.) If the binding is active for the Server service, the computer can respond to incoming requests for drive mappings from other TCP/IP clients.
