Using Ping to Test an IP Configuration
Ping is a command-line tool included with every Microsoft TCP/IP client (any DOS or Windows client with the TCP/IP protocol installed). You can use Ping to send a test packet to the specified address and then, if things are working properly, the packet is returned. Figure 16.19 shows the results of a successful Ping command. Note that four successful responses are returned. Unsuccessful Pings can result in different messages, depending on the type of problem Ping encounters while trying to send and receive the test packet.
Although Ping is a simple tool to use (from the command prompt simply type Ping with the IP address or host name you want to Ping), choosing what to Ping is the key to using it for successful troubleshooting. The remainder of this section covers which IP addresses or hosts you should Ping to troubleshoot TCP/IP connectivity problems.
