Exercise 16.1: Correcting a Network Configuration Error
Use this exercise to see the effects that an improperly configured network card has on other networking services and protocols. Before starting, make sure you have installed Windows NT Server with a computer that has a network adapter card and that TCP/IP has been installed.
| 1. | Clear the System Log in Event Viewer. |
| 2. | From the desktop, right-click Network Neighborhood and choose Properties from the resulting menu. |
| 3. | From the Network Properties dialog box, select the Adapters tab. |
| 4. | Select your adapter card from the list and choose Properties. |
| 5. | Change the IRQ of your adapter card to an incorrect setting. |
| 6. | Close this dialog box and choose to reboot your computer when prompted. |
| 7. | When your computer reboots, note the message received after the Logon prompt appears. The message should indicate A Dependency Service Failed to Start. |
| 8. | Log on and open Event Viewer. |
| 9. | Note the error message generated from the adapter card. Note the other error messages generated after the adapter card error. |
| 10. | Clear the System Log in Event Viewer. |
| 11. | From the command prompt, type ping 127.0.0.1. This Ping fails because TCP/IP doesn’t start if the adapter doesn’t start. |
| 12. | From the Network Properties dialog box, change the IRQ of your adapter card back to its proper setting and reboot. |
| 13. | Log on and check the System Log. There should be no adapter card errors or errors from networking services. |
- From the command prompt, type ping 127.0.0.1. This Ping succeeds because TCP/IP is started now.
