Exercise 16.2: Using Ping to Test an IP Configuration
This exercise uses Ping to verify a TCP/IP installation and configuration. You should have installed Windows NT Server and TCP/IP.
| 1. | From the desktop, right-click on Network Neighborhood and choose Properties from the resulting menu. |
| 2. | From the Bindings tab, expand all the networking services. |
| 3. | Select TCP/IP and choose Disable. |
| 4. | Repeat step 3 until you have disabled TCP/IP for all the listed networking services. |
| 5. | Close the dialog box and when prompted choose to reboot your computer. |
| 6. | When the computer reboots, log in. |
| 7. | From a command prompt, type ping 127.0.0.1. This Ping works because TCP/IP is installed. |
| 8. | From a command prompt, type ping x.x.x.x, where x.x.x.x is your default gateway address. This Ping fails because you have disabled TCP/IP from all the networking services. There isn’t a way for TCP/IP packets to be sent on the network. |
| 9. | From the Bindings tab in Network Properties, enable TCP/IP for all the networking services. |
| 10. | Close the dialog box and when prompted, choose to reboot your computer. |
| 11. | When the computer reboots, log in. |
- From a command prompt, Ping your default gateway. The Ping works this time because a path now exists by which TCP/IP communications can reach the network.
