Modems

Modems have been around for years and provide a cheap and relatively reliable method of communications over the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). Installing a modem in a computer is a straightforward process. This section covers the configuring, testing, and troubleshooting of modems.

There are two main types of modems: internal and external. Internal modems are slightly cheaper, but you must open the computer to install it, and they require a free interrupt (IRQ). If you elect to go with an external modem, you should check that you have an available communications (COM) port that will be able to handle the speed of the modem.
