Dialing Properties

From the Modem Properties dialog box (refer to Figure 17.6), you can also click the Dialing Properties button. You can the configure the system so that it knows where you are dialing from. This information is used in conjunction with Dial-Up Networking to allow the system to determine whether your call is long distance, if it should use a calling card, how to disable the call waiting feature, and so on.

When you click the Dialing Properties dialog box, the dialog box shown in Figure 17.11 appears. You may create a single location or multiple locations.

Several different items are available, and if this information is not set correctly, the client computer may attempt to connect to a local server as a long-distance call (or vice versa). The following list describes the entries that you can make:

I am dialing from. The name of the location. To create a new entry, click the New button and enter a name in the text box. The user will need to know which entry to use when dialing.
The area code is. The computer uses this information to determine whether it is required to dial the number as a long distance or as a local number.
I am in. Sets the country code for dialing purposes so the system can connect to international numbers.
To access an outside line, first dial. Set the access code for dialing out from a location. There is an entry for local calls and one for long distance.
Dial using Calling Card. Enables you to have the computer enter the calling card information to make the connection with the remote host. Click the Change button to review or change calling card information.
This location has call waiting. The call waiting tone often causes a connection to be dropped. You can enter the information here to disable call waiting for the location that you are dialing from.
The phone system at this location uses. Enables you to select whether the system that you are calling from will use tone or pulse dialing.

If there are problems trying to connect, you should always verify the information in the Dialing Properties.
