ISDN

One of the most common choices for connecting remote sites or even for individuals or small organizations to connect to the Internet, ISDN is becoming a very common method of communications.

Whereas a standard phone line can handle transmission speeds of up to 9,600 bits per second (compression makes up the rest of the transmission speed in most modems, such as those that transfer data at 33.6 Kbps), ISDN transmits at speeds of 64 or 128 kilobits per second, depending on whether it is one or two channels.

ISDN is a point-to-point communications technology, and special equipment must be installed at both the server and the remote site. You will need to install an ISDN card, which acts as a network card, in place of a modem in both computers. As you may have guessed by now, ISDN connections are more expensive than modems. However, if there is a requirement for higher speed, the cost will most likely be justified. Be aware, though, that in some parts of the world, this is a metered service—the more you use, the more you pay.
