PPP Problems
As was mentioned previously, Windows NT acts as a PPP server, which means that the client station and the server undergo a negotiation during the initial phase of the call.
During the negotiation, the client and server decide on the protocol to be used and the parameters for the protocol. If there are problems connecting, you may want to set up PPP logging to actually watch the negotiation between the server and client.
This is set up on the server by changing the Logging option under the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RASMAN\PPP\Parameters
The log file will be in the system32\RAS directory and, like the modem log, can be viewed by using any text editor.
Some of the problems that you may encounter are given in the following list.
- You must ensure that the protocol that you are requesting from the RAS client is available on the RAS server. There must be at least one common protocol or the connection will fail.
- If you are using NetBEUI, ensure that the name you are using on the RAS client is not in use on the network that you are attempting to connect to.
- If you are attempting to connect by using TCP/IP, then the RAS server must be configured to provide you with an address.
