Configuring the RAS Server
If several users are all having problems connecting to your RAS server, check the modem first, and then check the configuration of the server. This section covers the basic configuration for a RAS server, which is done when you install RAS or when you verify it after installation by going to the Network settings dialog box and double-clicking Remote Access Service from the Services tab.
You will see the dialog box shown in Figure 17.22. You will be able to configure each port and set the overall network preferences. Four buttons are concerned with the port settings:
- Add. Enables you to add another port to the RAS server. This could be a modem, X.25 PAD, or a PPTP Virtual Private Network.
- Remove. Removes the port from RAS.
- Configure. Brings up the Configure Port Usage dialog box, in which you can configure how this port is to be used (see Figure 17.23). Check this if no users are able to dial in.
-
Clone. This setting
lets you copy a port. Windows NT Server has been tested with
up to 256 ports.

Windows NT Workstation and Windows 95 (with service pack 1 or the OSR2 release) allow only one client to dial in).
This dialog box has three main areas: the first is Dial Out Protocols, which sets which protocols you can use to dial into another server. Then there are the dial in protocols that will set the protocols that users can use to connect to you.
Finally there are the Encryption settings. The level of security that you choose must also be set on the client computer. If the client cannot use the same level of security, they will not be validated by the server.
Each of the server-side protocols has a Configuration button. The following sections deal with the configuration of each. Before you can use a protocol with RAS, it must be installed on the server.
